Root Canal Treatment

Root canal is the name of the hollow space inside your tooth. There is a soft tissue called the pulp inside the root canal. It may be infected or inflamed due to a tooth decay, crack, or injury. You experience then pain when you chew, apply pressure, or take hot or cold drinks. Root Canal is also the name of the treatment you need to solve this problem.

The treatment begins with an examination of the problem tooth with an X-ray. This is followed by an administration of local anaesthesia. An opening is made in the crown of the tooth. With precision instruments, the infected pulp is cleaned from the pulp camber and root canal. The hollow space in the tooth is shaped for filling.

The root canal is filled with a rubber-like biocompatible material. Then adhesive cement is used to seal permanently the root canal. A crown is fixed on the tooth, if needed, for full protection and function. The treated tooth will not give you pain anymore.

Frequently asked questions

Is the root canal treatment painful?

The infection/inflammation of the root canal gives you great pain. The treatment is meant to relieve you of that pain permanently. There is slight pain when anaesthesia is administered. That is very mild, and the treatment as such is painless.
Can’t I just take antibiotics for the pain, without the surgical treatment?

You may get temporary relief from pain with antibiotics. However, the tooth decay, crack, or injury remains. The root canal will get infected and inflamed again, and pain will return again. Moreover, the antibiotics taken for pain may create a few unwanted side effects.
Isn’t extraction of the problem tooth better than the root canal treatment?

Your natural teeth are living teeth. A tooth treated for root canal infection becomes a dead tooth, but preserved like an Egyptian mummy. Preserving a natural tooth, though dead, is certainly better than extracting it, and fixing an artificial tooth in its place.
